Reverse osmosis water filters are a great way of providing your family with clean water. However, in order to have filtered water all the time, you must maintain the filtration system. Replacing the filters is very important when it comes to maintenance. That is why today, we are going to try to cover some of the most common questions of Apec water filter replacement.
The reverse osmosis systems that Apec offers have different stages that use different kinds of filters. Still, that wouldn’t be a problem if each filter didn’t have a different lifespan. Therefore, it is important to know a bit more about the schedule of Apec water filter replacements.
Filter Replacement Frequency
Since different stages mean different lifespans, you need to know how often each stage needs to be replaced. Most Apec systems have five stages of filtration. The filters from stages 1-3 have to be replaced once. However, you may need to replace them even sooner depending on the level of usage. The filters from stage 4 and stage 5 should be replaced every 2-4 years. This is the schedule for most Apec reverse osmosis systems. But, if the schedule for your model is any different, you should stick to that.
Stage One to Three Filters
Another factor that can affect the lifespan of the filters is the type of water you use. If you are using well water, the filters on stages 1-3 should be replaced every 6 months. On the other side, if you are using city water, you should replace them every 8000 gallons filtered.
Stage Four and Five Filters
The stage 4 membrane should be replaced every 3-5 years if you are using city water. If you are using well water, it is recommended to replace it every 2-3 years. Now the filter from the last stage should be replaced along with the one from stage 4.

Membranes Replacement Frequency
Different reverse osmosis models of Apec mean different membrane replacing schedules. Now, there are three models you can find. The 180gpd, the 240gpd, and the 360gpd one. The first one has two 90gpd membranes which should be replaced at the same time. The second model has three 90gpd membranes and the third one for 90gpd membranes. Regardless of the model you choose, you should replace all the membranes at the same time.
How to Replace Filters
Now that we have covered the Apec water filters replacement schedule, we should move on to the instructions.
1. Stages 1-3 Pre-Filters
- Firstly, shut off the cold water supply to the RO system. Then, after you shut off the tank’s ball valve, lift up the faucet lever to relieve the pressure. This way opening the housings will be a piece of cake.
- Now, have the RO standing upright and open the housing. If you don’t have good leverage, lay the reverse osmosis system down. Open the housing using a plastic wrench turning clockwise.
- Discard the old filters from their housings. Wash the housings carefully with mild soap. After you have done that, place the new filters in their housings. The sediment filter in the first stage and the carbon block filters in the second and third stages.
- After closing the housings make sure to tighten them using a wrench.
2. Stage 4 Membranes
- First off, locate the housing of the membrane.
- After you have located them, start inserting the membranes. Open the cap after removing the tubing from it, and insert the membrane.
- Remember to close the cap and reconnect the tubing to it as before. Don’t forget to connect each tubing to its matching housing. That part should be quite easy since they are all color-coded.
- Continue inserting all remaining membranes the same way.
3. Stage 5 Carbon Filter
- Find and remove the old stage 5 carbon filter. Disconnect the output tubing at point H and the input tubing at point G.
- Discard the old filter and insert the new one.
- After reconnecting the output and the input tubing just make sure that the flow is pointing to the output direction.
Why Should I Replace
To make it easier for you to understand, remember that filters work just like lint trays. Filters basically remove all the extra particles and debris that aren’t supposed to be there. This is how the system ensures that you get clean, filtered water. The same way the lint collector removes the extra lint from your clothes. So, if you don’t replace the filters on time, particles can clog up the filter.
Once that starts happening, the filter starts becoming less and less effective. In order to keep your system effective, you need to stick to the schedule and replace the Apec water filters on time.
